Saving your progress and playing on another device
You don't need an account to play. The game saves as you go, both in your browser and on our server. But until you link your camp to Google or an email address, it's tied to the browser you're using, so it's worth taking a minute to secure it once you've built something you'd miss.
The guest account
The first time you open the game it makes a guest account for you, with no sign-up and no details asked. Every change goes up to the server a few seconds later, and opening the game loads your newest camp. If your connection drops, you can keep playing; the camp stays on your device and goes up when you're back online.
The catch: a guest camp is linked to that one browser. If the browser's data is cleared, you play in a private window, or you switch to another device, the link is lost. Safari on iPhone and iPad also clears data for sites you haven't visited in about a week.
Save your progress to Google or an email
Go to Settings and find the Your progress card. It says plainly where your camp is: on this device only, saved as a guest, saved to an account, offline, or open somewhere else. Press Save my progress and choose:
- Google: sign in with your Google account.
- Email link: type your email address and we send you a sign-in link. No password.
Your guest camp is moved onto that account and nothing is lost. We keep only the email address or account ID needed to sign you in. The game will also offer this once you have something to lose, such as finishing chapter 1, but never in the middle of a night.
Recovery codes
If you'd rather not sign in, make a recovery code in Settings. It looks like GATE-XXXX-XXXX. Write it down somewhere safe. On another device, open Settings, choose Recovery code, type it in and your camp comes across. A code works once, and only your newest code is live.
Playing on another device
On the new device, open the game, go to Settings and choose I have a camp, then sign in with the same Google account or email (or use a recovery code). This replaces the camp in that browser with your saved one, so do it before you start building there.
If the same camp is open in two places, the older one stops saving and shows Playing on another device. Press Play here to load the newest camp on that device. Nothing is written over the other device's progress.
Starting again, and deleting your data
- Start again (Settings): wipes your stars, Scrap Metal, upgrades and camp, on this device and on the server, and starts a fresh game.
- Delete my progress from the server (Settings): removes your camp, stars and upgrades from our server, and takes you off the leaderboards. This browser then starts again as a new guest.
Neither can be undone. For more on what is kept and why, read the privacy page.
