Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most about Gate of the Dead. If yours isn't here, email support@unbeaten.com.au.

Is Gate of the Dead free?

Yes. It's free to play in your browser, and nothing is for sale on the website. Scrap Metal, power-ups and everything else are earned by playing.

Do I need to make an account?

No. The game makes a guest account for you automatically the first time you play, and saves as you go. You can link it to Google or an email address later so you can't lose it; see Saving your progress.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with the same save on each. On a phone the tabs sit along the bottom of the screen. On a computer you can also use the keyboard during nights.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Open gateofthedead.com and play. There's no app to install.

Are there ads?

Only ones you choose to watch. In a few places the game offers a short ad for a small reward: time off a build, a squad home early, double the Scrap Metal from a night you held, or 20 energy for the Mayor. You can watch up to five a day. Nothing plays unless you press the button, and you can play the whole game without ever watching one.

How does saving work?

Your camp is saved in your browser and on our server under a guest account. To carry on on another device, or to make sure a cleared browser can't lose your camp, save it to Google or an email link, or write down a recovery code. All of this is in Settings, under Your progress.

Can I play on two devices?

Yes, once your camp is saved to Google or an email (or with a recovery code). If the same camp is open in two places at once, the older one shows "Playing on another device" with a Play here button, so the two never overwrite each other.

Does it work offline?

If your connection drops while you're playing, you can carry on. Your camp stays on the device and goes up to the server when you're back online. You need a connection to load the game in the first place.

Why can't I upgrade a building?

The building sheet tells you what's in the way. The usual reasons: the Headquarters isn't high enough (no building can go above it), you're short of timber or steel, both building crews are busy, or the Mayor is out of energy. The Headquarters itself needs enough survivors.

I'm out of energy. What can I do?

Energy comes back at one every six minutes. You can also eat (beans, water, or hot stew once the Canteen is built). Meanwhile, collecting, recruiting leaders, wall crew upgrades and the Daily Siege, Bad Night, The Long Road and Holdout all cost no energy. See The Mayor and energy.

Is it scary or gory?

It's a zombie game, so there are zombies, but there's no blood. Hits are dust, sparks and knockback, and the art has a cartoon look.

Who makes the game?

Unbeaten Studios, a small independent games studio in Australia. See About and contact.

I found a bug, or I have an idea. How do I get in touch?

Email support@unbeaten.com.au. It helps to say what device and browser you use, and what you were doing when it happened.

How do I delete my data?

In Settings, under Your progress, choose Delete my progress from the server. That removes your camp from our server and takes you off the leaderboards. Start again in Settings wipes the camp and begins a new game. The privacy page has the details.
